Aerodynamic shaping has been used more frequently on road racing machines lately. Once your airspeed is more than 25mph, you're spending 9/10ths of your energy just punching through the air! But what if you're not actually racing?
Many of us have battled headwinds on our weekly group rides. Fighting a persistent gale as we plod back to the meetup is an all-too regular chore. Trek knew that everyone wrestled with this, and decided to give even the least competitive riders a fighting chance against the wind. Enter the Domane SL 7 eTap.
The best material to build the Domane SL 7's frame is Trek's own proprietary 500 Series OCLV carbon fiber. Trek's engineers could work with CFD software, producing an elegant and sleek shape. OCLV carbon fiber allowed them to be far more innovative with such a versatile and strong material. The frame shape of the Domane SL 7 was inspired by the Madone: Trek's premiere aero road bike. The KVF -Kammtail Virtual Foil- tube shaping allows the Domane to cheat the wind effectively. How well? You'll arrive at your destination a minute faster if the wind is howling in your face to the tune of 40kph/25mph. Even the fork blades and cable routing have been given attention towards cutting through the wind. Hiding your repair kit from the wind is easy with the Domane SL 7: Put it inside the frame! There's a clever internal storage compartment hidden under the front bottle cage that has room for a tube, tire levers and CO2 inflator. The Domane's IsoSpeed decouplers found at the top of the seat tube and head tube give the bike loads of compliance, allowing the bike to soak up rough and choppy pavement. The geometry and fit of the Domane SL 7 is much more upright than most high-performance road bicycles, allowing a wider range of riders -and rider flexibilities- to get comfortable for multi-hour rides.
Cutting-edge technology is also found throughout the components of the Domane SL 7, starting with a 12-speed (yes, 12) drivetrain. SRAM's Force eTap AXS drivetrain is also wireless, ensuring the fastest shifts in the business. The batteries that power the front and rear derailleurs are easily detached for charging, with up to 600 miles between charges. A 10-33T SRAM cassette and 33/46T SRAM Force crankset offers a massive gearing range, including a 1-to-1 ratio for the most challenging inclines.
The Domane SL 7 is equipped with a recent Bontrager product: The Aeolus Pro 3V OCLV carbon fiber wheelset. Boasting a 25mm inner width for large-volume tires as well as very light weight, the Aeolus Pro 3V wheels are a perfect match for riders looking to corner faster, slice through headwinds and smooth out rough roads barely worthy of the name. Bontrager also supplies the 700x32c R2 tires, bringing a cushy ride as well as confidence-inspiring grip. Needing wider rubber? The Domane SL 7 will take tires up to 38mm wide! Reigning in speed is the job of SRAM's Force hydraulic disc brakes, bringing excellent stopping power and lever feedback to every ride.
The cockpit of the Domane SL 7 does its level best to keep the rider comfortable during long days in the saddle, starting with a short-reach Bontrager VR-CF handlebar, complete with IsoZone pads under the bar tape. An alloy Bontrager Pro Blendr stem features accessory mounts for lights and a computer. A comfy Bontrager Arvada Comp saddle is the last line of defense against rough pavement.
A SRAM eTap AXS battery charger is included with the purchase of this bicycle.
Electronic drivetrain systems deliver excellent shifting, easy set up, and solid battery life. Here are the highlights of today’s electronic shifting systems:
Electronic shifting systems use powerful servomotors to rapidly shift the chain. Because microprocessors and sensors constantly monitor every aspect of the system, they shift with precisely and without chain rub.
Many major systems have customizable shifting. Some have the ability to add remote shifters for common riding positions, and some even allow you to change the functions of the shifting buttons.
Electronic groupsets are responsive and consistent. There are no cables to stretch and wear out, so you get a flawless shift every time. The added bonus is you’ll never have to replace a derailleur cable ever again.
